That was amazing. How people make things this polished in just 3 days is beyond me :P

Wow, this is insanely long and polished for a ludum dare game. It avoids the problems of most ludum dare games, in that it's actually fun :P The art and sound complement it very well too. I feel like the only thing missing is a way to hold still and fire directionally, but that's a minor gripe. Congrats on getting so much done so quickly!

Oh man, I love this. It's almost totally based on luck, but everything is so stylish and funny that it's still a blast to play. Haven't beaten it yet, but I will eventually -_-

Surn responds:

Glad you like it. I figured that having a high dependance on luck isn't such a bad thing if each session is short. At least it doesn't take up hours of your time only to obliterate you with a cheap shot *cough* FTL *cough*.

I like it! The retro feel is nice, and the controls feel pretty smooth. A bit too easy, but better that than impossibly difficult. The hidden lives and characters were a nice touch.

One suggestion, though. The first time I saw a fireball shooting face enemy, I didn't figure out that you could bounce the fireball back at it. I tried attacking it, and nothing happened, so I just jumped over it. This worked fine until level 9, where you had to destroy it. Until I realized that, it was kind of disorienting and frustrating. I would change the initial encounter so that you can't just jump over the head, and maybe change the projectile to look more like a blunt object that can be reflected than a ball of fire/energy.

Overall, cool game!

Awesome concept, really like the idea of each level having different rules.

Really nice to see a larger scope RPG on Newgrounds like this. The art is really nice, and the music fits the atmosphere really well. Lots of items and NPCs to talk to too, and subquests are a nice touch. While the programming works fine and there don't appear to be any bugs, unfortunately the gameplay is just a bit dull to me.

The random battles really slow down the pace, and don't seem to consist of much more than clicking attack until stuff dies (The skills don't seem to be particularly useful). Maybe some sort of auto-battle function that just automatically attacks whatever is at the top would speed things along a bit. I know a good RPG is very hard to make, so it might just be the nature of the project. Congrats on what you were able to accomplish with such a small team!

As a side note, I sometimes found it difficult to get through narrow passages (such as the bridge in the first town) and doors. Maybe increase the walkable area by a bit?

TheEnkian responds:

Woo! First review is positive! Thanks for checking out the game.

The skills get more useful as the game goes on and boss battles are a good bit trickier without them. Some characters get ones that hit all enemies at once, heal, inflict status effects, etc. The attack is intentionally not all that weak just because it drives me nuts when RPGs make you rely almost solely on your MP for the entire game.

Yeah, I totally get the narrow entrances thing. That's the entire reason we intentionally slowed the character down for doors :P It may not have been quite enough it seems.

Anyway, glad you ultimately liked it. Thanks again for playing!

Really like all the colorful craziness going on all over the screen, and the sense of speed is really nice. Pretty simple in terms of gameplay, but very satisfying. Good job!

The controls take some getting used to, but this is one of the most interesting, creative games I've played in a while. Great job!

DamianSchloter responds:

I'm personally very fond of games that one can get better at to some degree. So I'm quite ok with the fact that it takes people a while to get the hang of it. Still, I realize that the difficulty curve isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks for the kind words!

Good enough for what it is, considering you made it in a day. It would be nice if the finished version of the flag always was shown in the empty slot instead of getting covered up. Would also be nice if there were some simple sound effects and music. Maybe play the different national anthems for the different countries?

The art and animation are really nice, but you really need to display the controls somewhere. As far as I can tell, climbing the ladder doesn't work, so I can't figure out how to make it past the first guard. Also, you really should add some sort of preloader. I thought the game was broken at first.

Hi, I make games! And also music! That's about it.
